- Google
- Voiceflow
- Voiceflow
- Advent Calendar

Whew, what a great @voicelunch about the state of smart speakers and voice in Japan! Thanks Tomoharu Ito for your informative talk. Would love to further discuss the idea of #kawaii in voice! #voicefirst #voicelunch pic.twitter.com/2c9yQay88B

Here's great summary of that: https://t.co/9YSMRfFQp3

@kun432 and also @gabennett45: kawaii can be visual (big eyes, soft colors, round shapes). But can kawaii also be words or language?
— Maaike Groenewege (@MaaikeGee) 2021
Thank you so much @kun432 for making this list! I was the one that asked the question in global voicelunch 😊 This is a beautiful overview.
— Maaike Groenewege (@MaaikeGee) 2021
Or even sounds?
— Maaike Groenewege (@MaaikeGee) 2021
I think so. About voice itself, Romi's voice is based on a voice actress and many speech synthesis services in Japan has a variety of cute voice actors/actresses.

different people has differenet feeling of "Kawaii". Also, depends on situations or generations. but current "Kawaii" mainly comes from young girls. They create the current trend/fasion and some slungs in language or words.
— kun432@VFJUG🇯🇵 (@kun432) 2021年1月21日
I guess they feel "Kawaii" for the sounds of those slungs. Unfortunately, current voice assistants might not be able to speak like those and understand. (I guess pretty difficult to support because those slungs sometimes ignore Japanese grammers)

I understand that some of 'kawaii,' when gendered as 'female,' can be achieved through particles that indicate femininity (e.g., wa, wa yo, kashira), or variants of first person pronouns (e.g., atashi).

Wow, I’d love to learn more about the Romi conversational speaker. For those on this thread- do you know the approach this assistant takes? Is it completely random responses? If not, how is it designed to respond contextually? 👀 so cool!
— Brielle Nickoloff (@ElleForLanguage) 2021
Romi doesn't provide developer environment, so we don't know how Romi caputre, recognize and repsponse what we said. but seems Romi designs that guesses our intent from keywords, response based on it, and also try to continue conerversation as multi-turn.
— kun432@VFJUG🇯🇵 (@kun432) 2021年1月24日
sounds like its design is based on the context, but its responses are often gibberish and conversation is awkward. As a smart assistant to complete user's tasks like Alexa/Google, Romi is not good. However, that make us feel somehow funny and "Kawaii".
